Jaguar launches Type 01 electric vehicle in New York
Jaguar has launched its new Type 01 electric vehicle in New York, unveiling a 1,000-horsepower luxury sports saloon following a scrutinized rebrand and a period of falling sales. Parent company Jaguar Land Rover revealed the avant-garde vehicle, marking a complete break from its traditional lineup.
From Woke Ridicule to New York Debut
The vehicle arrives following an intense two-year rebrand that initially sparked widespread criticism and discussion across global media. Automotive journalist Schmidt noted that the noise brought the brand from the back pages to the front pages just as it was struggling in a crowded international market. Since the initial Miami concept event, leadership has shifted.
JLR chief commercial officer Leonard Hoornik noted at a June investor day that the launch location in America demonstrates the firm’s continued reliance on the US market despite recent regulatory rollbacks. JLR CEO PB Balaji reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to pure electric drivetrains during the same investor presentation, stating that the required performance attributes can be delivered solely through electric systems.

Design Specifications and the UK Parking Space Dilemma
The production model closely mirrors the 2024 concept car, featuring an ultra-long bonnet, a minimalist four-section interior divided by a central spine, and no traditional rear window. Powered by three electric motors producing over 1,000 horsepower and more than 1,000 pound-feet of torque, the Type 01 aims for a driving range exceeding 400 miles on a single charge.
The vehicle’s dimensions present immediate logistical hurdles for certain domestic markets. Measuring longer than standard infrastructure allows, the car will not fit into a standard 4.8-metre UK parking space. Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover defended the footprint by pointing to all-wheel steering that grants the vehicle the turning circle of a Fiat 500, while arguing that larger vehicles like the Land Rover Defender with rear-mounted spare wheels exceed similar lengths.

JLR Cuts Jobs to Fight Competition and Losses
Priced starting at £130,000—more than double the outgoing F-Type’s entry point of approximately £62,000—the Type 01 targets a younger, wealthier, and deeply tech-literate demographic. Glover reported that California-based AI company Nvidia boss Jensen Huang reviewed a prototype and responded enthusiastically. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027 following a commercial sales rollout in early 2027. Automotive journalist Steve Fowler characterised the release as a last throw of the dice for a brand that has historically struggled to generate serious profits from Jaguar models.
