Jacob Bridgeman Wins Genesis Invitational After Nerve-Wracking Finish

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Jacob Bridgeman won the Genesis Invitational on Sunday at Riviera Country Club, holding off a late charge from Rory McIlroy and Kurt Kitayama to secure his first PGA Tour victory. The 21-year-old finished at 17 under par, one stroke ahead of Kitayama and two ahead of McIlroy.

The final round began with Bridgeman holding a six-shot lead, a seemingly comfortable margin on the challenging Riviera course. However, the lead began to shrink as McIlroy, spurred on by a vocal crowd, made a run on the back nine. Kitayama also surged into contention, posting a 17-under total that briefly put pressure on Bridgeman.

Bridgeman’s round included a series of crucial pars and a nervy bogey on the 16th hole, where a wayward tee shot landed him in a bunker. He navigated the difficult 17th, another par, with a sensible approach shot after finding a bunker off the tee. The pressure culminated on the 18th green, where he faced a three-and-a-half-foot putt to win the tournament.

“I didn’t really feel crazy nervous until I had a five-footer for bogey on 16. that one was sketchy,” Bridgeman said after the round. “I hit a really decent putt and luckily it went in, and then I was really nervous from there on out. I couldn’t even feel my hands on the last couple greens, I just hit the putt hoping it would get somewhere near the hole.”

McIlroy’s attempt to force a playoff fell just short, his birdie putt on the 18th liping out. Kitayama finished strongly, but Bridgeman’s clutch putt secured the win. Adam Scott finished at 16 under par after a stunning round of eight birdies and no bogeys, but ultimately fell short of contention.

Bridgeman’s victory marks a significant milestone in his young career. He turned professional in 2023 and earned $4.4 million on the course last season. His caddie, G.W. Cable, took a pay cut to join Bridgeman on the Korn Ferry Tour, a gamble that appears to have paid off. Bridgeman credited his swing coach, Scott Hamilton, for helping him develop his game.

The Genesis Invitational attracted a notable crowd, including actor Ben Affleck, who followed McIlroy’s group throughout the front nine.

Bridgeman’s win at Riviera comes with a $4 million winner’s check.
