Former Red Sox World Series MVP Jackie bradley Jr. signs with Savannah Bananas
Indianapolis, IN – jackie Bradley Jr.,a former major League Baseball All-star and 2018 world series champion with the Boston Red Sox,has become the frist ex-MLB player to join the Savannah Bananas’ league full-time. The move marks a new chapter for the 35-year-old outfielder and signals the growing appeal of the bananas’ unique brand of baseball.
Bradley expressed his excitement about the opportunity, telling ESPN, “I feel like this was another opportunity to not only [benefit] the league, but to be able to help the people behind me to… hopefully, catapult other African American ballplayers to want to play the game.” The Bananas, known for their fast-paced “Banana Ball” rules and entertaining atmosphere, are expanding their reach and attracting players seeking a different baseball experience.
A stellar defensive center fielder, Bradley played nine seasons with the Red Sox, earning an All-Star selection in 2016 and a Gold Glove in 2018. He was a key contributor to Boston’s 2018 World Series victory, earning ALCS MVP honors. In 964 regular season games with the Red Sox, Bradley established himself as a reliable player and fan favorite.
His last major league appearance came with the Kansas City Royals in 2023. While remaining open to a potential MLB return, bradley emphasized his contentment with his career. “If there’s an opportunity [to go back to the majors], I would obviously weigh that. If that’s for my family, then I’m not going to rule out any opportunities,” he told ESPN. ”But it’s not something that I’m striving for. I’m very content with how my career has unfolded.I’ve been truly blessed. I’m just enjoying the moment.”
Bradley first experienced Banana Ball last summer, receiving a standing ovation at Fenway Park, an experience that ultimately led to this full-time commitment. The Indianapolis Clowns, a historic Negro Leagues team now part of the Bananas association, will be Bradley’s new team.
