Jack Pinnington Jones: Brit Reaches First ATP Quarter-Final in Dallas | Tennis News
Jack Pinnington Jones, a 22-year-old Briton, continued his remarkable run at the Dallas Open on Thursday, securing his place in the quarter-finals with a 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory over American Eliot Spizzirri.
The win marks a significant milestone in Pinnington Jones’s burgeoning career, coming on the heels of a stunning upset over world number 20 Flavio Cobolli earlier in the tournament. He had to navigate two rounds of qualifying to even reach the main draw of the ATP 500 event.
Against Spizzirri, ranked 68th in the world, Pinnington Jones demonstrated resilience, battling through a tight three-set match. The victory will see him climb 43 places in the world rankings to 138th, and a win in the quarter-finals against Marin Cilic could propel him into the top 110.
Pinnington Jones’s path to professional tennis included a period at Texas Christian University (TCU), where he competed alongside fellow British player Cam Norrie and was part of a team that won a national title. He opted to forgo his final year at TCU last May to pursue a full-time career on the ATP Tour.
Prior to his success in Dallas, Pinnington Jones experienced a qualifying loss at the Australian Open in January. He then reached the final of a Challenger event in Soma Bay, Egypt, before arriving in Dallas and embarking on his current four-match winning streak. He secured his first Grand Slam main draw victory at Wimbledon last year, defeating Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
Pinnington Jones is currently supported by the LTA’s Pro Scholarship Programme, presented by Lexus, which provides the highest level of support to British players aged 16-24 with the potential to reach the top 100.
His quarter-final opponent, former US Open champion Marin Cilic, presents a formidable challenge. The match is scheduled for Friday, with a semi-final berth at stake.
