Jack Chambers Urges ICTU To Postpone Public Sector Strike Ahead Of WRC Talks
Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers wrote to union leaders requesting that the Irish Congress of Trade Unions postpone a planned public sector strike and attend talks at the Workplace Relations Commission, thejournal.ie reported.
Chambers Pushes for Workplace Relations Commission Talks
The eleventh-hour appeal comes ahead of a scheduled nationwide strike set for Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Chambers pointed to the allocation of €1.2 billion for public service pay in the national budget announced the previous week as proof of the government’s dedication to securing a deal.
Union figures have warned that up to 400,000 workers could participate in the industrial action. However, the exact number of participants remains fluid as some personnel hold legal exemptions known as derogations to maintain essential emergency care services.
The dispute stems from the expiration of the previous collective pay agreement covering public sector workers. Industrial action began on September 30, 2026, with Wednesday’s stoppage marking a major escalation in the ongoing disagreement over pay restoration.
Fórsa Strike Threatens Major Public Disruption
Fórsa, Ireland’s largest public sector trade union, stated that the industrial action will represent the largest public sector strike since the peak of the financial crisis in 2009. Workplaces are expected to close entirely in many sectors where workers are not bound by essential service derogations.
Chambers argued that the upcoming strike is unnecessary and warned of severe consequences for the public. The planned strike action on Wednesday the 14th of October will cause great disruption to the public, especially the most vulnerable in our society, and also result in an avoidable loss of earnings for public servants,
Chambers stated in his letter.
Negotiators face a tight window to avert widespread facility closures. If Wednesday’s talks fail to yield a postponement or a permanent settlement, a second strike day remains scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
