Iyanla Vanzant Skips Daughter’s Funeral to Protect Her Peace

January 27, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The grief of losing a child is a devastating experiance that Iyanla⁣ Vanzant knows all‍ too well.⁢ During a recent interview, ‍the‍ famed “Fix My⁤ Life” host opened up about her arduous decision not to attend‍ her⁣ youngest ‍daughter’s funeral, which was a real eye-opener for everyone.

Iyanla Vanzant, 72, gained ‍her notoriety⁢ as the powerhouse life coach with her popular television show, “Fix My Life,” on the ⁤OWN network. A mother of three—Gemmia, Damon, and Nisa—Vanzant experienced every parent’s worst nightmare in⁢ 2023 when her youngest daughter, Nisa, ⁤passed away at age 49. The loss ⁣mirrored the ⁤pain from 2003, when⁤ she buried her ⁤eldest child, Gemmia, following a battle with colon cancer.

While speaking with ⁣“The Breakfast Club,” ⁤vanzant revealed her decision not to attend her ‍youngest child’s funeral was about protecting ⁤her peace.

When charlamagne posed the‍ question about setting boundaries and avoiding accountability, Vanzant explained that creating boundaries can be very different from building emotional walls, which opened the conversation for her to choose ‍not ‍to attend Nisa’s funeral. She stated that she had ⁣already grieved and didn’t want to re-experience the trauma in a public setting. Vanzant felt attending the funeral would have been⁢ more about others’ expectations than her own healing process.

“I⁢ had already grieved,” Vanzant shared. “I ⁣knew that if I went to the funeral, I would be in a space where people were projecting their grief⁢ onto me. And⁤ I didn’t have the energy to carry that.”

Vanzant emphasized the importance of self-care ⁣during times of⁤ immense ‍loss. she explained that honoring her own needs was crucial for her well-being and ability to navigate her grief in a healthy way. This decision, while unconventional,‍ allowed her to maintain her⁤ emotional strength ⁢and continue her life’s work ‍of helping others.

This isn’t the first time Vanzant ⁤has publicly discussed her grief. She⁢ has been open about the profound impact Gemmia’s⁣ death had on her life and how it shaped her viewpoint on loss and healing. Her willingness to share her experiences has resonated with many who have faced similar challenges, offering a message of⁢ hope and resilience.

Vanzant’s story serves as a reminder that⁤ grief is a deeply personal journey, and there is no right‍ or⁢ wrong way to‍ cope with loss. prioritizing self-care and setting boundaries are essential components of the healing process, even when those choices‍ may be difficult or misunderstood.
