Italy’s World Cup Hopes & Buffon’s Plea Amidst Doubts | 2026 Qualifiers

March 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Gianluigi Buffon, Italy’s Delegation Chief, acknowledged widespread public skepticism surrounding the national team as they prepare for a crucial World Cup play-off against Northern Ireland on March 26th, according to reports from Jakarta-based news outlet detiksport and Italian sports publication Football Italia.

The Azzurri face Northern Ireland in Bergamo, with a potential subsequent match against either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina, in a bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Italy’s failure to qualify for the previous two World Cup tournaments has fueled doubts about their current squad, a sentiment Buffon confirmed is keenly felt within the team.

“It’s true You can feel people’s scepticism, but I’m convinced that even the harshest critics will support Italy when the whistle blows,” Buffon stated, as reported by Football Italia, referencing the upcoming play-off match. He emphasized the need for the team to demonstrate a shift in public perception.

The current climate of doubt extends beyond recent World Cup failures. Italy’s diminished presence in European club competitions is also contributing to the prevailing pessimism. No Italian teams reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League this season, with only Bologna reaching the Europa League’s last eight after eliminating AS Roma. This lack of success is perceived by some as indicative of a broader stagnation in Italian football, with the nation struggling to keep pace with evolving tactical approaches.

Buffon, the legendary former goalkeeper, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to overcome these challenges. “They are all extremely solid guys, used to handling every kind of pressure. The magic that the Italian national team can create goes beyond the current difficulties,” he said. He stressed the importance of respecting their opponents, but also believes that a full-strength performance from the Italian team will be sufficient to advance to the final play-off round.

Buffon also indicated he would step down from his role as Italy’s Delegation Chief if the team fails to qualify for the World Cup, according to Football Italia. This underscores the high stakes surrounding the upcoming play-off matches and the pressure on the team to secure a place in the tournament.

“We must respect Northern Ireland, but I also believe that our team giving 100% will be enough to reach the Final. The players must be aware of their qualities,” Buffon concluded.
