Italian-Americans in Italy: A Story of Identity & Return

March 25, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

A surge in demand for authentic Italian cuisine in the United States is driving a boom for high-conclude Italian restaurants, with thirteen establishments currently holding Michelin stars as of early 2026. This growing appreciation for Italian culinary traditions reflects a broader trend in American dining, where consumers are increasingly seeking quality ingredients and expertly prepared dishes.

Los Angeles’ Angelini Osteria, celebrating over two decades in operation, has become a cornerstone of the city’s Italian dining scene. Known for its authentic cuisine and hospitality, the restaurant features dishes like sea urchin linguine and lasagna verde, earning recognition as a top Italian restaurant globally. In Atlanta, A Mano, located in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, offers a diverse menu including Panko-crusted chicken parmigiana and pesto rigatoni, alongside an extensive wine and cocktail selection. The restaurant’s carbonara, crafted with tagliatelle, pancetta, parmesan, spring peas, shallots, and a farm egg, is a particularly popular choice.

Houston’s Trattoria Sofia, part of the Berg Hospitality Group, emphasizes seasonal ingredients in its rustic Italian offerings. The menu includes classic dishes like bucatini al pesto and pizza Margherita made with buffalo mozzarella, as well as Tuscan specialties like salsa di fagioli bianchi, a white bean dish. Pasta cacio e pepe and chicken Parmigiana are also highlighted, complemented by a wine list focused on Italian and American labels.

The popularity of Italian food in the U.S. Dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with significant Italian immigration between 1880 and 1924 contributing to its widespread adoption. Approximately 5.5 million Italians immigrated to the U.S. Between 1820 and 2004, establishing strong Italian communities, particularly in the Northeast. As of the 2020 census, individuals identifying as having Italian ancestry alone numbered over 6.6 million, representing 2.0% of the total U.S. Population. When including those with partial Italian ancestry, that number rises to over 16.8 million, or 5.07% of the population.

The demand for high-quality Italian dining experiences is further evidenced by publications like Modern Luxury and Tasting Table, which have both recently released lists of the best Italian restaurants across the country. These curated selections highlight the diversity and excellence of Italian cuisine available in the United States, ranging from established institutions to newer, innovative establishments.
