Israel Accuses & Iran Trade Disruption: Caspian Sea Port Attack

March 20, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Russian officials on Friday accused Israel of disrupting trade routes following an Israeli military operation targeting vessels at Bandar Anzali, a key Caspian Sea port in northern Iran. The operation, confirmed by multiple sources, marks the first known instance of the Israel Defense Forces directly targeting infrastructure linked to a critical supply line between Iran and Russia, according to reports.

Moscow’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement alleging the strikes deliberately targeted civilian vessels engaged in legitimate commerce. While the ministry did not specify the nature of the goods transported, the accusation underscores growing Russian concerns over the escalating conflict’s impact on its economic and strategic interests. “These actions are a blatant violation of international maritime law and a dangerous escalation of the situation,” the statement read.

The Israeli government has not officially commented on the operation, maintaining its policy of neither confirming nor denying specific attacks within Iran. However, a Western diplomatic source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters that the strikes were intended to disrupt the flow of weapons components and other materials from Iran to Russia, materials reportedly used in Moscow’s ongoing war in Ukraine. This aligns with previous reports indicating a growing intelligence assessment that Iran is providing substantial military aid to Russia.

The strikes at Bandar Anzali reach amid a broader pattern of Israeli and U.S. Military actions targeting Iranian infrastructure. Earlier this week, an Israeli strike reportedly hit Iran’s South Pars gas field, shared with Qatar, prompting a sharp rebuke from Washington. President Trump stated the U.S. Was not informed of the attack and warned against further strikes on the gas field, threatening a forceful response should Iran retaliate against Qatar.

Iran has responded to the escalating attacks with its own retaliatory strikes, targeting energy infrastructure in Gulf states. On Thursday, Iran launched missile attacks on Qatar’s Ras Laffan, one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas export terminals and commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, effectively paralyzing marine traffic through the vital shipping lane. A vessel was reportedly hit by a projectile just off Qatar’s coast on Thursday, though all crew members were reported safe, according to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations Center.

The disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is having a significant impact on global energy markets, with crude oil shipments severely curtailed. Russia, analysts say, is financially benefitting from this disruption. Gulf states, meanwhile, are reportedly hesitant to respond directly to Iran’s attacks, seeking assurances of continued protection from the U.S. And Israel, according to reports from the Jerusalem Post.

Amidst the escalating tensions, Amit Baram, an Israeli official, is scheduled to travel to Washington for meetings with U.S. Officials. The purpose of the meetings remains undisclosed, but is expected to focus on de-escalation efforts and the future of security cooperation in the region. The international coalition negotiating with Iran is reportedly attempting to secure guarantees regarding the Strait of Hormuz and the energy sector, though details of those negotiations remain confidential.

Iran has also announced the arrest of 500 individuals accused of providing information to enemies of the state, signaling a tightening of internal security measures. Israeli intelligence, according to Reuters, has begun utilizing information from informants within Iran to target security checkpoints, representing a new phase in its campaign against Tehran.
