Island in Sumatra to become treatment site for 2,000 wounded Gazans – Middle East and Africa

Indonesia to Host 2,000 Gazan War Victims for Medical Treatment

Galang Island Designated for Humanitarian Aid Effort

Indonesia is preparing to provide critical medical care for 2,000 Palestinians injured in the ongoing Gaza conflict, utilizing Galang Island as a temporary treatment facility.

Nation’s Humanitarian Mission Expands

The government announced plans to leverage existing infrastructure on Galang, an 80-square-kilometer island in the Riau Islands province, to host and treat the injured Gazans. This initiative is part of a broader humanitarian mission that includes airlifting food and essential supplies via Hercules cargo aircraft.

“President Prabowo Subianto has given an order for Indonesia to assist in the medical treatment of 2,000 Gazans who have fallen victim to the war. They include individuals injured from bombardments, debris or other causes.”

Hasan Nasbi, Presidential Communication Office (PCO) Head

The directive for this medical assistance was issued during a cabinet meeting. Accompanying family members will reportedly be accommodated in nearby lodging facilities.

Temporary Stay for Healing

Officials stressed that the stay for the 2,000 patients will be temporary, focused solely on their recovery. This isn’t a permanent relocation. Upon the completion of their medical treatments, they will be returned to Gaza. Hasan clarified.

This plan comes as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza escalates. As of mid-November 2023, the United Nations reported that over 1.5 million people had been displaced in Gaza, many requiring urgent medical attention amidst damaged infrastructure and limited resources (UN OCHA, November 2023).
