Isis Sio Out of Coma After Boxing Knockout | Women’s Boxing News
Boxer Isis Sio is out of a medically induced coma, her family and team announced Monday, but remains in intensive care following a knockout loss Saturday in San Bernardino, California. Sio, 19, was hospitalized after being defeated by Jocelyn Camarillo just over a minute into the first round of their junior flyweight bout.
According to a statement released by Sio’s team and obtained by ESPN, she is no longer on a ventilator but continues to receive care in the intensive care unit at Loma Linda University Health medical center. Medical staff are monitoring her condition across three specialized divisions.
“Isis is a passionate, disciplined, and well-prepared athlete who carefully evaluates each opportunity placed before her,” the statement read. “Her decision to compete on Saturday, March 21, against Jocelyn Camarillo was not made lightly, but rather thoughtfully reviewed and analyzed prior to acceptance.”
Sio entered the fight with a professional record of 1-2, having previously suffered a body punch knockout loss in January. Camarillo, previously undefeated, secured her first professional knockout against Sio with a series of head punches. Footage from the arena showed Sio being stretchered out although convulsing, according to reports.
Andreas Hale, a combat sports reporter for ESPN, first reported the news of Sio’s condition. Hale, who joined ESPN in 2024, also contributes to coverage of mixed martial arts and professional wrestling, and hosts a indicate on Sirius XM’s Fight Nation. He previously worked as a senior writer and multimedia host for The Sporting News and DAZN.
The family’s statement concluded with an expression of gratitude for the support received. “At this time, Isis remains in ICU, but she is off the ventilator and we are hopeful for her progression,” it said. “We are awaiting further updates from her medical team. She is currently under the care of three specialized medical divisions who are closely monitoring her condition. We sincerely appreciate the continued support, thoughts, and prayers during this time.”
