Isaiah Katumwa Pays Tribute to Ugandan Music Icon Moses Matovu
Renowned jazz saxophonist and composer Isaiah Katumwa has paid tribute to Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu, following his death in the early hours of Thursday in Kibuli, Kampala. Katumwa remembered the late icon as a vital mentor, pioneer, and inspiration who helped shape the foundation of Uganda’s music industry.
Matovu, who was a celebrated saxophonist and a longtime member of Afrigo Band, passed away in Kampala. Following the news, Katumwa shared a heartfelt tribute reflecting on Matovu’s decades-long career and the personal impact the veteran musician had on younger generations.
A Pioneer and Mentor to Ugandan Musicians
Katumwa emphasized that Matovu’s decades of consistency, discipline, and musicianship proved that a serious and lasting music career was achievable in Uganda. According to Katumwa, the late icon helped create the path for those who entered the industry later.

Katumwa stated.
The jazz saxophonist noted that observing Matovu’s journey provided proof as a young musician that an African artist could dedicate an entire life to the craft and earn respect.
