Irish Government Survives No Confidence Motion Amid Healy-Rae Pressure

April 15, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Independent Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae resigned his position during a motion of confidence debate in the Dáil on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

The resignation occurred during a session prompted by a motion of no confidence introduced by Sinn Féin following a week of blockades and protests. While the government survived the vote with a result of 92 to 78, the departure of the Kerry TD reduces the coalition’s support to 92, which is five votes above the 87 required for a majority.

Healy-Rae, who served as Minister of State for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and the Marine since January 2025, informed the Dáil that he was tendering his resignation and voting no confidence in the leader of the country. He stated that he believed the government “has let the people of Ireland down” and described himself as a “gauge of the people of rural Ireland.”

Taoiseach Micheál Martin defended the administration’s response to the current fuel crisis, asserting that the government has introduced the largest assistance package of any European country. Martin noted that the support package in Spain, the closest comparison, is over a quarter smaller. He characterized the blockades as “destructive” and stated that while the right to protest exists, individuals do not have the right to threaten the livelihoods of thousands of families.

Tánaiste Simon Harris dismissed the Sinn Féin motion as “just another one of their stunts.” Other government members expressed surprise at the timing of the resignation; Foley stated that no one within the government had been informed of the move in advance.

The resignation marks the first significant break in the coalition’s unity during the current confidence challenge. The government continues to operate with a narrowed majority of 92 seats.
