Ireland Fuel Costs: Government Plans Tax Cuts & Support Measures

March 22, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The Irish government is preparing a package of measures to alleviate rising fuel costs driven by the ongoing conflict in Iran, with a focus on reducing excise duties on petrol, and diesel. The proposals, still being finalized this weekend, are slated for discussion at a Coalition leaders meeting on Monday night and a full Cabinet review on Tuesday morning.

Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris confirmed in a statement that the measures will too include assistance for the haulage industry and those at risk of fuel poverty. He indicated the interventions would be implemented for a “short, defined period,” with options for renewal or adjustment based on evolving circumstances. Harris also stated that his officials are preparing an economic analysis to assess potential scenarios arising from the conflict.

The planned cuts to excise duty will apply to both petrol and diesel, as well as green diesel used in the agricultural and marine sectors. However, Sinn Féin’s Deputy Pearse Doherty has expressed concern that the government may not reduce excise on home heating oil, despite prices having doubled. “Half measures like this from Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael won’t cut it,” Doherty said. “It is not even close to what is required to deal with skyrocketing fuel bills.” RTÉ News reports that an adjustment to home heating oil costs is under consideration.

The move comes as gasoline prices continue to climb across the United States and globally, directly linked to the disruption of oil markets following the U.S. And Israel’s attack on Iran on February 28th. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline in the U.S. Reached $3.84 on Wednesday, a significant increase from $2.98 before the conflict. The price of Brent crude oil has surged to over $108 a barrel, up from roughly $70 weeks ago, while benchmark U.S. Crude is trading at almost $98 a barrel.

Labour’s Ciarán Ahern is advocating for a broader approach, calling for increased access to remote and flexible working arrangements to reduce commuter fuel consumption. He pointed to the International Energy Agency’s confirmation that enabling remote work can significantly lower energy demand, citing the precedent set during recent weather warnings when employees were encouraged to work from home.

A Dáil resolution to enact the proposed measures is scheduled for a vote on Tuesday afternoon, following Government approval. The government’s plans remain subject to final agreement and legislative approval.
