Iran’s Sardar Azmoun Dropped From National Team Over Dubai Meeting Amid Political Tension
Iran’s national football team has been plunged into turmoil after star striker Sardar Azmoun was expelled for what Iranian media reports describe as an act of “disloyalty” to the government. The decision, announced on Wednesday, March 20, 2026, effectively rules Azmoun out of contention for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, beginning June 11.
The expulsion stems from Azmoun’s recent Instagram post featuring a meeting with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, according to reports from Iranian news agencies including Fars News Agency. Although the post has since been removed, it drew swift condemnation from hardline elements within Iran, particularly given the current geopolitical tensions.
Iran has engaged in recent rocket and drone attacks targeting the United Arab Emirates, following air strikes conducted by the US and Israel that resulted in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader. This escalating conflict has heightened sensitivities surrounding any perceived displays of affinity with the UAE.
A source within the national team, cited by Fars News Agency, confirmed Azmoun’s expulsion. State television commentator Mohammad Misaghi publicly criticized Azmoun’s actions, labeling them an act of disloyalty and questioning his judgment. “It’s unfortunate that you don’t have enough sense to understand what kind of behavior is appropriate at a given time,” Misaghi stated on Thursday.
Azmoun, who currently plays for Shabab Al-Ahli in Dubai, has scored 57 goals in 91 international appearances for Iran since his debut in 2014. His absence represents a significant blow to Team Melli’s chances in the World Cup. Reports suggest that other Iranian footballers with ties to the UAE, including Mehdi Ghayedi and Soroush Rafiei, may as well face repercussions, with unconfirmed reports of potential asset confiscations.
The Iranian Football Federation has yet to issue an official statement regarding Azmoun’s expulsion.
