Iran’s Failed Missile Attack on US Base in Indian Ocean & UK Involvement
The Iranian military launched two ballistic missiles toward the strategically crucial Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean on Saturday, according to reports from the semi-official Mehr news agency. While the missiles reportedly failed to hit the installation, the launch represents a significant demonstration of Iran’s missile capabilities, exceeding previous estimates of its reach.
The base, jointly used by the United States and the United Kingdom, is a key location for military operations in the Middle East, and Asia. The attempted attack occurred amidst escalating tensions between Iran and Western nations, marked by both direct and indirect confrontations in the region. The Mehr agency characterized the missile launch as a demonstrative act, intended to signal an expanded range of Iranian missile technology.
The United Kingdom had recently authorized the United States to utilize British military bases, including RAF Fairford in England and Diego Garcia, for potential retaliatory strikes against Iranian missile facilities. This decision followed Iranian attacks on allied ships in the Strait of Ormuz, according to a statement released by Downing Street. Initially, Prime Minister Keir Starmer had hesitated to grant access to British bases, seeking assurances of the legality of any military action. However, following further attacks targeting British allies, he reversed course.
The authorization for U.S. Use of British bases extends to defensive operations aimed at degrading launch sites and capabilities used to attack vessels in the Strait of Ormuz. This move came after repeated criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who expressed disappointment with the initial reluctance of the UK to fully support U.S. Actions.
While the Iranian missiles did not impact the Diego Garcia base, the incident has heightened concerns about potential escalation. The Wall Street Journal reported the launch of intermediate-range missiles, but confirmed they did not reach their target. As of Saturday, there have been no reports of casualties or damage.
Iran has also issued warnings to the United Kingdom regarding the use of its bases by the U.S., suggesting that such actions could endanger British lives. The situation remains fluid, with calls for urgent de-escalation and a swift resolution to the ongoing tensions.
