Iran War 2026: Roundtable on Regional Impacts & Shifting Power Dynamics

March 25, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Iran War Escalates as Conflict Enters Fourth Week

On Tuesday, March 24, 2026, Iran launched a barrage of missiles and drones targeting Israel and Gulf states, even as President Donald Trump claimed the United States was engaged in talks with Iran to de-escalate the conflict. The attacks followed large-scale strikes by the United States and Israel against Iranian military assets and leadership on February 28, 2026, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his replacement by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei.

The escalating conflict, which began with U.S. And Israeli strikes on February 28th, has now impacted at least 12 countries in the region. Retaliatory Iranian strikes have hit military and civilian targets in Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the Emirates, and Oman. The Iranian Red Crescent reported rescuing survivors from rubble in Tehran following the U.S.-Israeli strikes, stating a residential area on the outskirts of the capital was targeted.

The crisis has significantly disrupted global oil markets. Tehran’s actions to chokehold the Strait of Hormuz have snarled international shipping and sent fuel prices soaring, threatening a global recession, according to Esfandyar Batmanghelidj writing in Foreign Policy on March 4, 2026. Oil prices have surpassed $100 a barrel.

Despite the ongoing attacks, President Trump stated on Tuesday that Iran had provided the U.S. With an “oil and gas related” gift “worth a tremendous amount of money,” suggesting progress in negotiations. However, Iran has publicly denied any negotiations are taking place, though a senior official indicated messages had been exchanged through intermediaries. Pakistan has emerged as a potential location for an in-person meeting between U.S. And Iranian representatives in the coming days.

The conflict has also led to increased U.S. Military presence in the region. President Trump approved the deployment of over 1,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East. Thousands more U.S. Marines are en route to the Gulf. At least eight U.S. Service members have been killed, and a reported U.S. Strike on an Iranian elementary school resulted in the deaths of at least 175 students.

Israel has also intensified its military operations. Defense Minister Israel Katz announced plans to establish a “security zone” extending up to the Litani River in southern Lebanon, 20 miles from the border, in its campaign against Hezbollah, which has been firing rockets into Israel in support of Iran. The conflict follows a prior Israel-Hezbollah war in 2024, which deteriorated Lebanon’s relations with Iran.

The death toll across the Middle East has surpassed 2,000, with over 1,200 deaths reported in Iran as a result of Israeli and American strikes, according to the Iranian Red Crescent Society.

The U.S. Administration’s war aims remain unclear, with President Trump issuing conflicting statements about U.S. Military objectives. The conflict is unfolding amidst accusations that the Israeli government is seeking to sow regional chaos and inflict hardship on the Iranian population.

As of March 24, 2026, the United States and Iran have not confirmed a date or location for direct negotiations, and military operations continue across the region.
