Iran Nuclear Plant: Missile Strike Reported – Bushehr Facility Targeted
Iran reported a second missile impact at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant today, according to a statement released by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The agency confirmed Iran’s notification via a post on its X account.
While Iran stated that no damage occurred to the facility and no personnel were injured in the latest incident, the IAEA continues to monitor the situation closely. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi reiterated his call for “maximum restraint” to prevent nuclear safety risks during the ongoing conflict, the agency stated.
This follows an earlier report from the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization that the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant was targeted in a missile attack by the United States and Israel. That attack, also reported to have caused no technical damage or casualties, occurred on the same site. According to the IAEA, the earlier strike on March 19th impacted a structure 350 meters from the reactor.
The Bushehr facility, located on the Persian Gulf coast, was previously targeted in an attack on March 17th, with no reported casualties or damage. Today’s incident marks the second reported impact within less than two weeks.
The Kremlin has warned that targeting nuclear facilities in Iran is “extremely dangerous” and could have “irreversible consequences,” according to a statement by Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
In a related development on March 23rd, the IAEA expressed concern over reports of military activities near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, and IAEA Director General Grossi discussed the matter with the head of Russia’s Rosatom, according to reports.
