Iran-Israel Conflict: Modi-Trump Talk Focuses on De-escalation & Strait of Hormuz
Modern Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, discussing the escalating conflict in the Middle East and emphasizing the importance of de-escalation and the restoration of peace, according to statements released by both governments.
The conversation centered on the need to maintain stability in the region, particularly regarding the crucial Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane for global energy supplies. Modi conveyed India’s concerns about potential disruptions to trade routes and fuel availability, issues already impacting the nation’s economy, as highlighted in a speech to the Rajya Sabha earlier today.
“We are trying to procure gas and crude oil from all possible sources; efforts will continue in the coming days,” Modi stated in the Rajya Sabha, acknowledging the strain the conflict is placing on India’s energy security. He warned that a prolonged crisis could have “serious consequences” for the Indian economy, noting disruptions to the supply of petrol, diesel, gas, and fertilizers.
The U.S. Administration, through envoy Sergio Gor, has publicly welcomed Modi’s role as a potential mediator in the crisis. Gor emphasized this support following his discussions with President Trump, signaling a belief in India’s strategic position to influence de-escalation efforts. This comes as the U.S. Seeks to navigate a complex geopolitical landscape following recent exchanges between Iran and Israel.
During his address to Parliament, Modi also underscored India’s consistent calls for de-escalation and the unimpeded passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. He condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure, including energy and transport networks, reflecting India’s commitment to regional stability. India has been actively engaged in diplomatic outreach, maintaining contact with countries across West Asia, as well as with Iran, Israel, and the United States.
The Prime Minister’s discussions with Trump followed reports of an Iranian missile being intercepted over Lebanese airspace, marking the first such incident, according to Lebanese security forces. This escalation adds to the growing concerns about the widening scope of the conflict.
India is actively diversifying its energy sources to reduce dependence on any single supplier, a policy Modi highlighted as crucial for mitigating the impact of the ongoing crisis. The government is working to secure energy supplies from “all possible” avenues, according to the Prime Minister’s statement.
As of Tuesday evening, no joint statement detailing specific commitments or next steps from the Modi-Trump conversation has been released. The U.S. State Department has not yet responded to requests for further comment on the discussion.
