Iran Conflict Escalates: Week 4 of War & Israeli Strikes

March 21, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Iran announced restrictions on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz on March 2nd, threatening to attack any ships attempting to transit the strategic waterway without coordination with Tehran, in response to what it termed U.S. And Israeli aggression, according to reports published today.

The escalation marks a new phase in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, shifting from a joint U.S.-Israeli offensive to an Iranian response that exceeded expectations within the U.S. Administration, according to Dr. Yazid Sayigh, a senior researcher at the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut. Sayigh, speaking to Al Jazeera, noted the initial U.S.-Israeli attack demonstrated a high level of coordination between air forces and intelligence agencies. However, the Iranian counter-offensive – involving the launch of missiles and drones – demonstrated Tehran’s capacity to sustain fighting and exert pressure, including targeting neighboring countries and constricting the Strait of Hormuz. This, Sayigh suggested, may compel Washington to reassess the duration of its military campaign.

The conflict’s immediate repercussions are being felt globally, threatening the flow of approximately 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, which transits the Strait of Hormuz. This disruption is driving up energy prices and impacting sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, and even the production of artificial intelligence and electronic components.

Iran has reportedly detained three vessels in recent years – two in 2023 and one in 2024 – near or within the Strait of Hormuz, with some of these detentions occurring after the United States seized tankers linked to Iran.

On March 18th, Israel reported fatalities and injuries following an Iranian missile attack. A man and a woman in their seventies were killed in Ramat Gan, according to Magen David Adom, Israel’s ambulance service. Emergency responders reported scenes of destruction in multiple locations across Tel Aviv, including in Bnei Brak, where a paramedic sustained minor injuries from shrapnel. The organization’s director general, Eli Bin, described the scene as “difficult and painful, resulting from a direct hit on a residential building.”

Recent Iranian attacks have targeted central areas of Israel, with shrapnel falling near the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem – a first, according to reports. Even if the conflict subsides soon, recovery from the disruptions caused by the airstrikes and Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz will not be rapid, as the waterway carries 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas.
