iPhone Flip: Concept & Design – iOS News Beta

February 19, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Apple is actively testing a second foldable iPhone design, a clamshell-style device tentatively dubbed the “iPhone Flip,” according to a report from MacRumors published February 13, 2026. The development of this alternative form factor comes as Apple prepares to launch its first foldable iPhone, a book-style device, later this year.

The “iPhone Flip” is currently undergoing supply chain testing, according to a Weibo user known as “Fixed Focus Digital,” who has a track record of accurate supply chain leaks. The device would directly compete with existing flip-phone style foldables like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series and the Motorola Razr. Whether the “iPhone Flip” will ultimately move into mass production remains undecided, sources indicate.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported that Apple was considering a clamshell-style foldable iPhone, describing it as “square.” The current testing phase suggests development has progressed beyond initial consideration. The initial foldable iPhone, expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max this fall, will feature a design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, opening like a book. This first iteration is anticipated to include a 7.7-7.8 inch inner display, optimized for multitasking and media consumption, according to TechTimes.

While the book-style foldable aims to provide a larger screen experience for productivity and entertainment, the “iPhone Flip” is envisioned as a more portable option. Early estimates suggest the “iPhone Flip” could feature a 3.5-inch external display for notifications and quick interactions, expanding to approximately 6.8 inches when unfolded. Production estimates for a potential 2026 launch ranged from 15-20 million units, indicating Apple’s confidence in consumer demand for a compact foldable device, though current reports suggest a later release is more likely.

Apple’s exploration of multiple foldable designs reflects a growing consumer interest in versatile mobile devices. The company is reportedly focused on achieving crease-free displays and utilizing premium materials like titanium in its foldable models. The first foldable iPhone is expected to include features like Touch ID and a new “C2” modem.
