iPhone charging speeds evolved since 2007, reports albayan.ae

October 12, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro achieves a 50% charge in 15 minutes, marking a significant acceleration in charging speeds compared to the original 2007 model, according to technical reviews cited by albayan.ae.

iPhone 18 Pro Reduces Charging Times via USB-C

The original iPhone required nearly three hours and a half to move from an empty battery to a full charge. Reviewers documented that the device took under two hours to reach 90 percent capacity, but needed another 90 minutes to finish the remaining ten percent.

By contrast, the iPhone 18 Pro cuts down replenishment times significantly, reaching half-capacity in a quarter of an hour. albayan.ae reported that this leap stems from the widespread adoption of the USB Power Delivery (USB PD) standard, which routes higher currents through USB-C cables.

Charging speed depends on multiple hardware variables rather than the phone alone. Devices, charging bricks, and cables must share compatible protocols to reach peak energy transfer. While companies like Apple and Google rely on USB PD, other manufacturers implement proprietary protocols such as Qualcomm’s Quick Charge or OnePlus’s Warp Charge, creating performance variations across different accessories.

Battery Capacity Grows from Original iPhone to iPhone 18 Pro

Battery capacities have grown alongside charging speeds, though at a more measured pace. The inaugural 2007 device featured a 1,400 milliamp-hour battery rated for up to eight hours of talk time, seven hours of video playback, six hours of internet usage, 24 hours of audio playback, and 250 hours of standby.

Modern hardware operates on a much larger scale. The iPhone 18 Pro integrates a 4,288 milliamp-hour battery, while the iPhone 17 delivers up to 30 hours of video playback. Despite those capacity gains, manufacturing techniques for the energy cells themselves have advanced slowly relative to processors, displays, and camera sensors. Most of the recent increases in capacity result from physical cell enlargement inside the chassis rather than fundamental breakthroughs in chemical storage technology.

The mobile industry continues to wrestle with the engineering challenge of packing higher capacities and longer lifespans into slim enclosures without adding excessive weight. Because raw battery technology progresses gradually, portable power banks remain a common accessory for users requiring extended daily usage.
