iPhone 20: Design, Camera & Release Date Rumors for Apple’s 2027 iPhone
Apple’s upcoming iPhone, anticipated for release in 2027, is generating considerable speculation as the company prepares to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone. Reports suggest a radical redesign is in development, potentially eliminating physical buttons entirely and embracing an all-glass construction.
The original iPhone debuted in 2007, fundamentally altering the mobile landscape. While its influence is undeniable, Apple’s role in the technology sector has evolved significantly, now facing competition from emerging artificial intelligence companies. The 2027 iPhone is viewed as a pivotal product that could define the company’s trajectory for the next decade.
The question of naming the 2027 model remains open. Following the pattern of iPhone 17 (released in the past year) and the expected iPhone 18 in 2026, a logical progression would be the iPhone 19. However, mirroring the jump from iPhone 8 to iPhone X in 2017 – a move coinciding with the iPhone’s 10th anniversary – Apple may opt for the iPhone 20 or even the iPhone XX. No official confirmation regarding the naming convention has been released.
A key element of the anticipated redesign centers around the removal of physical buttons. A report originating in China last year indicated that the iPhone 2027 could feature a buttonless design, with power and volume controls integrated into the device’s frame. These virtual buttons would provide haptic feedback, mimicking the feel of physical presses. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has described the planned design as “highly complex.”
Further fueling speculation, Bloomberg reported in May 2025 that Apple is aiming for a device with “no display cutouts.” However, analyst Ross Young suggests a fully seamless display may not materialize until 2030. Young also anticipates that Face ID components will be positioned “under a transparent area of the display,” resulting in a smaller notch in both the 2026 and 2027 iPhone models. The possibility remains that a special 20th-anniversary edition could feature a truly bezel-less screen, positioned as a premium offering above the standard iPhone Pro models.
Beyond the exterior, the iPhone 20 is expected to feature an upgraded display utilizing Samsung OLED technology with Color Filter on Encapsulation. This technology removes the polarizing film from the OLED panel, potentially increasing brightness, reducing glare, and improving energy efficiency. Apple is also anticipated to adopt 2nm chips with the iPhone 18 release later this year, and the 2027 model could feature a second-generation 2nm chip for further performance and efficiency gains. The device may also incorporate high-bandwidth RAM to accelerate data transfer speeds.
Battery technology is also expected to advance, with Apple reportedly exploring the use of silicon anode batteries. These batteries offer higher energy density, allowing for greater capacity within the same physical space. This technology is already present in some Chinese smartphones, and Apple’s adoption could lead to increased battery life in the anniversary iPhone.
While reports have speculated about the inclusion of a 200-megapixel camera sensor in 2028, details regarding the iPhone 20’s camera system remain limited. Further improvements to image processing, particularly in portrait and macro modes, are anticipated.
Pricing for the iPhone 20 remains unknown. While recent reports suggest the iPhone 18 will not see a price increase, a special edition commemorating the 20th anniversary could command a premium price, potentially comparable to foldable iPhone models that are also rumored to be in development.
Apple is expected to unveil the 20th-anniversary iPhone in 2027. The company is also anticipated to release the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max later this year, featuring a smaller Dynamic Island and a more powerful processor.
