Apple’s newly released iPhone 17e is generating discussion as a compelling, budget-conscious option, particularly when compared to the iPhone 16. While positioned as an entry-level device, the 17e incorporates several upgrades borrowed from the more expensive iPhone 17, including a starting storage capacity of 256GB and MagSafe technology, all at a price point of $599 – the same as its predecessor, the iPhone 16e.

Design and Display Differences

Despite being a newer model, the iPhone 17e retains a design aesthetic reminiscent of older iPhones, specifically utilizing the same notch design as the iPhone 13. This contrasts with the iPhone 16, which features the Dynamic Island cutout. Both phones share a similar in-hand feel, with the iPhone 17e being slightly smaller but maintaining the same weight of 170 grams. Both devices boast a 6.1-inch OLED screen with the same resolution, contrast ratio and 60Hz refresh rate, indicating Apple reserves the ProMotion technology for its higher-end models.

Performance and Camera Upgrades

The iPhone 17e is powered by the A19 chip, whereas it features a four-core GPU compared to the five-core GPU found in the standard iPhone 17. The inclusion of a 48-megapixel camera is a significant upgrade for the ‘e’ series, bringing it in line with the more expensive models. Apple has also enhanced the durability of the iPhone 17e with Ceramic Shield 2 protection, offering improved scratch resistance compared to the Ceramic Shield front on the iPhone 16.

Battery Life and Production Volumes

Apple claims the iPhone 17e offers up to four hours more video playback time than the iPhone 16. Still, independent testing by CNET did not reveal a noticeable difference in battery performance between the two models. Initial production volumes suggest Apple is prioritizing the iPhone Air, with its production exceeding that of the iPhone 16 Plus. This indicates a strategic shift towards catering to a broader consumer base with the Air model.

A Competitive Landscape

The iPhone 17e presents a compelling alternative for consumers seeking an upgrade from older models like the iPhone 14, 15, or 16, without incurring the higher cost of the iPhone 17. The combination of increased storage, MagSafe compatibility, and a more durable display makes it a strong contender in the mid-range smartphone market. However, the retention of the notch and the lack of a significant battery life improvement may deter some potential buyers.
