iOS 27: Apple to Open Siri to Third-Party AI Models & Major Interface Changes
Apple plans to fundamentally reshape Siri in iOS 27, opening the virtual assistant to integration with rival AI chatbots like Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude, according to reports from Bloomberg and multiple tech news outlets. The move, slated for release this fall, marks a significant departure from Apple’s traditionally closed ecosystem and signals a major “AI reboot” for the long-criticized voice assistant.
Currently, when Siri encounters a query it cannot handle, it offers users the option to send the question to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. IOS 27 will expand this functionality, allowing iPhone, iPad and Mac users to select their preferred AI service – including Gemini and Claude – through latest “Extensions” options within the Settings app, specifically under the Apple Intelligence and Siri section. Users will be able to download compatible chatbot apps directly through the App Store.
This expansion is expected to generate revenue for Apple through subscriptions to third-party AI services purchased via the App Store. The change will also end OpenAI’s exclusive partnership with Apple, leveling the playing field for other AI developers. Bloomberg reports that AI companies will demand to update their apps to support the new integration feature in iOS 27.
Alongside the opening to third-party chatbots, Apple is developing its own revamped Siri, powered by Google’s Gemini models. The company is reportedly testing a dedicated Siri app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, offering a central hub for AI interactions and a history of past conversations. This app would allow users to manage multiple AI-powered projects and queries simultaneously.
The overhaul extends beyond a new app. Apple is also exploring new interfaces for Siri, including integration within the Dynamic Island and potentially replacing the Spotlight search function. An “Inquire Siri” button is also being tested for inclusion in app menus, and a “Write with Siri” option is planned for the keyboard. These changes suggest Apple intends to make Siri a more pervasive and integral part of the user experience.
Many features initially promised for iOS 18 have been delayed and are now slated for inclusion in the iOS 27 release, indicating the scale of the Siri overhaul. Apple is expected to unveil the changes at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8. The company has been working on these AI-powered features since at least WWDC 2024, but development setbacks and testing challenges have pushed the full rollout to iOS 27.
