iOS 26.4: CarPlay to Get Video Playback & Apple TV Support

February 18, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Apple is preparing to bring video playback to Apple CarPlay, a feature first previewed at last year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The capability is currently available in the first beta of iOS 26.4, recently released to developers, signaling a potential rollout to consumers in the coming months.

The integration of video support isn’t solely dependent on Apple’s software development. Automakers must also enable the functionality within their vehicle’s infotainment systems, prioritizing safety by ensuring video playback is only accessible when the vehicle is parked. This requirement necessitates a deep level of integration between iOS 26.4 and the car’s operating system.

References to video playback within CarPlay have been identified in the iOS 26.4 beta, including strings related to initial setup, specific notifications, and content management on the car’s display. According to reports, Apple TV streaming will likely be supported, with CarPlay-specific interactions planned. The system will prompt users to avoid initiating subscriptions although driving, directing them to complete the process on their iPhone when stationary.

The arrival of video support coincides with other enhancements in iOS 26 for CarPlay users. These include a redesigned, compact view for incoming calls, the addition of Tapback reactions within Messages, and real-time activity widgets designed to minimize driver distraction.

While the features are currently embedded in the beta version of iOS 26.4, their inclusion in the final public release remains unconfirmed. Even if Apple approves the changes, the actual availability of video playback will depend on the responsiveness of automobile manufacturers in supporting the feature on their respective platforms. Industry analysts suggest a significant time gap could exist between the operating system update and full implementation across different vehicle makes, and models.
