iOS 26.4: Apple Podcasts Gains Enhanced Video Podcast Support – First Shows Available
Apple has begun rolling out a fresh video podcast experience within Apple Podcasts as part of the iOS 26.4 update, currently available in its Release Candidate form. The update allows creators to offer podcasts in a video format that users can stream or listen to as audio, eliminating the need for separate podcast feeds.
The initiative empowers content creators by allowing them to distribute video podcasts through participating hosting providers and ad networks while retaining full control over their content and monetization strategies. Acast, Amazon’s ART19, iHeartMedia’s Triton Digital, and SiriusXM – encompassing SiriusXM Media, AdsWizz, and Simplecast – are among the initial supporters of HLS video, with plans for further providers to join in the future, according to Apple’s announcement.
A key feature of the new system is the support for dynamic ad insertion within video podcasts. Creators can now integrate video advertisements, including host-read segments, accessing a wider video advertising market without relinquishing creative control. These advertisements are designed to integrate seamlessly into existing shows, preserving the user experience and allowing creators to monetize content through sponsorships and dynamic advertising.
Apple will not charge hosting providers or creators for distributing podcasts on Apple Podcasts, regardless of whether they utilize traditional RSS/MP3 or the new HLS video format. However, the company will begin charging participating ad networks a standard, impression-based fee for delivering dynamic ads in HLS video on Apple Podcasts later this year.
Currently, the availability of the video podcast experience is dependent on support from hosting providers. Stephen Robles, a podcast creator, has successfully launched two of his podcasts – Primary Technology and Movies on the Side – utilizing the new video system. Robles highlighted the availability on social media, noting the support from hosting provider TransistorFM. “If you’re running the iOS 26.4 RC, you can watch not one, but TWO of my podcasts using the new Apple Podcasts Video feature *right now*,” Robles posted on social media March 23, 2026.
Apple states the new video podcast experience is compatible with iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, and web browsers. Support for Mac and Apple TV is currently absent, though the potential for enhanced viewing on those platforms is acknowledged.
The full release of iOS 26.4 is anticipated later this week, bringing the new video podcast experience to a wider audience of Apple users.
