iOS 26.4: Apple Music Redesign & New Features (AI Playlist Limited to US)
Apple’s iOS 26.4 Update Brings Visual Refresh and Concert Integration, AI Playlists Remain US Exclusive
Apple has released iOS 26.4 for iPhone, introducing a redesigned interface for Apple Music, integrated concert listings, and several user-requested improvements. However, the highly anticipated AI-powered playlist creation feature, Playlist Playground, remains unavailable outside of the United States.
Visual Overhaul: Album Art Takes Center Stage
The most immediately noticeable change in iOS 26.4 is a significant visual update to Apple Music. Album and playlist artwork now extends beyond the traditional top-of-screen confinement, dynamically coloring the entire interface. The background, buttons, and surrounding elements adopt hues derived from the dominant colors within the artwork. This design element, reminiscent of a similar feature in iOS 8, is enhanced by Apple’s Liquid Glass technology for a more refined aesthetic.
Long-Requested Improvements Arrive
Alongside the visual changes, iOS 26.4 delivers three key improvements that address long-standing user requests. The first is the ability to add a song to multiple playlists simultaneously. Previously, users had to repeat the process for each playlist individually. The update introduces a multi-select button when adding a song to a playlist, allowing users to designate multiple lists at once.
A music ambient widget for the home screen is also included. This feature, initially available in the Control Center last year, now offers a smaller or medium-sized option directly on the home screen, streamlining access for users who frequently utilize it for perform, study, or relaxation.
Finally, Apple Music now integrates concert listings directly within artist profiles. A “Upcoming Concerts” section appears on artist pages, displaying venue, time, and a link to purchase tickets. A “Concerts For You” section on the home tab highlights shows by frequently listened-to artists near the user’s location. This integration provides a streamlined experience for discovering live music events.
Playlist Playground: A US-Only Feature for Now
The most talked-about addition, Playlist Playground, leverages Apple Intelligence to generate playlists based on text prompts. Users can describe the desired mood or theme – for example, “music for a morning coffee” or “90s road trip songs” – and the AI creates a 25-song playlist with a corresponding title. The app also offers prompt suggestions for users unsure where to begin, and allows for further refinement and manual adjustments.
Despite the feature’s promise, Playlist Playground is currently limited to users with accounts registered in the United States. Attempts to access the feature using region-spoofing methods, such as changing system region or Apple ID settings, have proven unsuccessful, as access is restricted at the server level.
Future Integration in iOS 27?
Apple’s decision to initially limit Playlist Playground to the US market suggests a phased rollout strategy. The company may be evaluating the feature’s performance and gathering user data in its primary market before expanding its availability. This approach could inform further development and integration within a future iOS version, potentially iOS 27.
With these updates, Apple Music continues to evolve beyond a simple music player, aiming to become a more integrated and personalized music experience. The visual refresh, concert integration, and usability improvements are available to all users with the iOS 26.4 update, while the AI-powered Playlist Playground remains a feature reserved for US customers for the time being.
