IOA Names 17-Athlete Delegation for Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics
The Indian Olympic Association announced a 17-athlete delegation to represent the country across 11 sports at the Dakar 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games, marking the first Olympic event hosted on the African continent.
Senegal Games Will Feature 2,700 Youth Athletes
Scheduled to run from October 31 to November 13, 2026, the Games in Senegal will feature approximately 2,700 youth athletes from 207 delegations competing across 25 sports. The event is structured for competitors aged 17 or younger during the competition year, pairing high-level international competition with educational and cultural exchange programs.
Indian Olympic Association President PT उषा described the upcoming event as a critical milestone for developing the country’s athletic future. In a statement released alongside the delegation announcement, she noted that the selected roster represents the pipeline of talent expected to feed into the Brisbane 2032 Olympics and subsequent international competitions. The association also reported plans to sign memoranda of understanding for sports cooperation and exchange with several African National Olympic Committees, including Namibia and Mauritius, during the Games.
Sarthak Arya Targets Future Olympic and Commonwealth Games
Among the athletes selected for the Dakar delegation is table tennis player Sarthak Arya, who pointed to the youth event as a foundational stepping stone for his senior career. Arya stated an ambition to progress from the Youth Olympics toward representing India at the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad and the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane, with a longer-term focus on a potential home Olympics should India secure hosting rights for 2036.
The Indian Olympic Association indicated that administrative meetings during the Senegal event will focus on talent identification systems, athlete development frameworks, and building sustainable pathways from youth competition to elite senior tiers. These institutional talks aim to align with domestic sports goals as the country prepares for future multi-sport bids, requiring athletes and their support networks to coordinate closely with advanced sports rehabilitation and athletic training specialists to manage multi-year training loads safely.
