Investigation Launched After TranzAlpine Train Stranded in Canterbury Tunnel
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) has initiated an investigation into an incident involving a TranzAlpine passenger train that became stranded inside a tunnel on Saturday. The service, which was traveling from Christchurch to Greymouth, came to a halt within Tunnel 9 on the Midland Line at approximately 9:50 a.m. The train remained stationary inside the tunnel, located roughly 10 kilometers north of Springfield between Staircase and Cragieburn, for more than an hour. According to reports, the locomotive experienced mechanical issues that prompted the driver to stop the service. An engineer arrived on-site by 11:00 a.m. To reset the locomotive, allowing the train to clear the tunnel before it was ultimately towed back to Christchurch by a relief train. A total of 103 passengers were on board at the time of the breakdown. Lisa Brien Herd, a passenger traveling with her family, stated that the train slowed to a stop after entering the tunnel. She noted that the deceleration was not sudden, and passengers were informed shortly thereafter that the driver was attempting to resolve an engine issue. Clare Morgan, KiwiRail’s general manager of passengers, stated that there was no risk to passenger safety during the delay. The company has since offered all affected travelers a full refund and provided bus transportation for those who wished to continue their journey to Greymouth. The TAIC is now seeking to gather information from those who were on the train. Louise Cook, the commission’s chief investigator of accidents, emphasized the importance of securing passenger accounts to assist with the investigation. “It’s crucial in every investigation to capture any evidence that could change with time — and that includes the recollections of the passengers on board, so we’re keen to hear from all of the passengers as soon as possible,” Cook said. KiwiRail has confirmed that it will conduct its own internal review of the technical failure. The TAIC investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to collect evidence from the scene and witness statements.
