Intesa Sanpaolo experienced widespread disruptions to its payment systems on August 5th, impacting point-of-sale (POS) transactions across Italy. Customers reported difficulties completing purchases, with transaction limits temporarily capped at €250. The most notable concentration of reported issues, according to Downdetector, originated in Rome, Naples, and Milan.
The outage, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, was attributed to a service failure and was not the result of scheduled maintenance. This incident follows a similar disruption on March 31st,when numerous Intesa Sanpaolo users encountered problems with both electronic payments and ATM withdrawals. Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy’s largest banking group by market capitalization, serves over 13.4 million customers as of December 31, 2023, according to their annual report.The bank has over 2,600 branches throughout Italy.
