Instagram Launches Edits Desktop App for Mac With AI Support and 4K Exports

Instagram Launches Desktop Video Editor on macOS With AI Agent Support and 4K Exports

Instagram released its video editing software, Edits, as a free desktop application for macOS, bringing multi-track editing, color grading, and AI agent integration to Apple silicon computers.

The Tech TL;DR:

• The Edits desktop app is free to download for Mac users running Apple silicon (M1 or later), requiring no Windows or Linux builds at launch.
• Users can connect external AI assistants via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), including Meta’s Muse, to execute automated tasks like rough cuts.
• Export capabilities feature watermark-free 4K video rendering alongside direct publishing tools for Instagram feeds and Reels.

Android Headlines reported that the desktop client addresses the limitations of mobile screens by accommodating longer-format widescreen projects. The application introduces a multi-track timeline, detailed audio waveforms, and customizable keyboard shortcuts borrowed from industry-standard NLE software. Users can import custom LUTs and font files, while accessing built-in royalty-free audio libraries.

Connect Preferred AI Assistants Using the Model Context Protocol

For AI-assisted workflows, users can enable the Model Context Protocol in the application settings. According to Edits product lead Matthew Simari in an interview with The Verge, this architecture allows creators to connect their preferred AI assistant rather than relying on a single built-in tool. Creators can prompt Meta’s Muse to ingest raw footage from a local downloads folder and autonomously construct an initial assembly cut.

      "command": "node",
      "args": ["/path/to/edits-mcp-server.js"]
    }
  }
}

After the automated assembly phase, users can open the project file natively within Edits to execute manual keyframing, color grading via wheels and curves, and log conversions. Creators can transition between automated and manual editing states at any point in the pipeline.

Publish Finished Projects Directly to Instagram from Desktop Clients

Finished projects can be published directly to Instagram from the desktop client without local file exports, supporting feed tagging, locations, and trial reels. While the app handles horizontal and vertical aspect ratios for cross-platform distribution, cross-platform project synchronization remains under development. Instagram confirmed that users cannot currently edit the exact same project across mobile and desktop clients simultaneously.

System requirements restrict the software strictly to Macs equipped with Apple M-series processors, omitting older Intel-based hardware. Instagram plans to issue weekly updates to the macOS client as development continues.
