Instagram Data Use & Süddeutsche Zeitung – Your Privacy Matters

The Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) editorial staff augmented an article with content from Instagram, prompting a data protection notice to users. The notice, visible on the social media platform, stated that the data enrichment occurred with user consent.

The SZ utilizes Instagram to deliver local news and context, particularly for Munich and the wider Bavarian region. According to the newspaper’s Instagram profile, the account aims to provide “the overview – we deliver the context.” Links to the original articles accompanying Instagram posts are available on the SZ website.

In July 2025, the SZ’s Munich bureau (@szmuenchen on Instagram) acknowledged a period of limited activity and responsiveness on its social media channels due to a strike by journalist unions and publishers. A post from July 13, 2025, indicated that news and comment replies would be restricted between July 14th and 16th. The dispute involved ongoing tariff negotiations between journalist guilds and publishing houses.

The SZ-Magazin, a supplement to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, also maintains a presence on Instagram, offering a curated selection of articles. Recent content highlighted a piece exploring the benefits of periodically disconnecting from the world and a career advice article featuring Ragnhild Struss, who argued that frequent job changes do not necessarily lead to greater job satisfaction. Struss suggested that most jobs can be restructured to turn into more fulfilling.
