According to proceedings at the London Inner South Coroner’s Court cited by AP News, police stated at the time of the incident that the death was treated as unexpected but not suspicious. Dr. Julian Morris stated during the short hearing that various reports provided reason to suspect an unnatural death, mandating an official investigation.
The inquiry follows Arday’s resignation from his post as professor of sociology of education on August 5. Arday had achieved prominence in 2023 when he became Cambridge’s youngest Black professor at the age of 37.
Plagiarism Accusations and Institutional Scrutiny
Arday’s resignation preceded an internal investigation launched by the university regarding allegations of plagiarism, misrepresented research, and fabricated CV credentials. Subsequent media scrutiny alleged that more than 100 passages from Arday’s 2015 doctoral thesis matched an earlier paper written by another researcher.
Further questions arose concerning Arday’s public claims regarding charitable fundraising and his personal background, including statements that he overcame developmental delays and learned to read late in his youth. The opening of the inquest coincides with the publication of Arday’s memoir, titled Great and Unfortunate Things, released in the U.K. by Simon & Schuster. The book details his personal journey through developmental challenges to attaining a professorship at Cambridge. Meanwhile, a community-backed fundraiser established in his memory gathered nearly 225,000 pounds from 7,900 donors, with proceeds designated to support his family and cover funeral and memorial expenses.
