Innovation Party Faces Scrutiny Over Contact with Convicted Sex Crimes Offender

Kang,a member of the Innovation Party,publicly revealed he attempted to contact Cho while Cho was incarcerated,seeking an interview regarding a case of sexual violence. This revelation has sparked criticism, with Kang stating the party “turned away from the victim’s screams.” The situation highlights a growing debate within the innovation Party and raises questions about its commitment to addressing sexual violence and upholding ethical standards, especially as it seeks to position itself as a progressive force in South Korean politics.
Kang disclosed he informed Cho of the sexual violence case on July 17th and sent a letter requesting an interview. He further explained his rationale for contacting a prisoner, stating that political messaging often occurs through prison visits and that party leaders are frequently informed through such interactions.
Innovation Party representative Kim Sun-min countered these claims, stating she had never discussed the matter with the former president. Though, Kang criticized this response, arguing the party’s rhetoric of “people” and “heart” clashes with its emphasis on law and procedure.
Kang also revealed he requested a meeting with Cho upon his release on August 15th, granted through a special Liberation Day pardon. Cho reportedly agreed to meet in early September after completing his local schedule. Kang expressed his disappointment that meeting with the former president appeared to take precedence over supporting victims of extreme suffering.
