New CAF Inneo metro Trains Boost Capacity on Naples Line 11
Naples, Italy - Passengers on Naples’ Line 11 are benefiting from increased capacity and modern amenities as new CAF Inneo metro trains enter service. Three six-car trains are currently operational, with seven more slated to join the fleet by the end of 2026.
The introduction of these trains marks a important upgrade for the EAV network and its riders. Each 107.7-meter-long train can carry approximately 1,200 passengers, including over 130 seated, and features accessible design elements like inter-car gangways and dedicated wheelchair spaces. The €100 million order – with €60 million funded through Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan – includes a three-year maintenance agreement.
The initial contract for four trains was signed in 2020 with EAV, and a subsequent option for six additional trains was exercised in 2023. This expansion reflects a commitment to modernizing Naples’ public transportation infrastructure and addressing growing ridership demands.
While earlier CAF inneo trains delivered under a 2017 contract experienced initial software issues in 2022 that temporarily sidelined the first unit, these new deliveries represent a fresh start and a focus on reliable service. The trains are expected to play a crucial role in improving the commuter experience and supporting regional mobility.
