Ineke van Gent: Life Beyond Politics After Stepping Down as Mayor

by Emma Walker – News Editor

Ineke van Gent, 68, is stepping down as mayor of Schiermonnikoog, but her political journey is far from over. Van Gent plans to continue her lifelong commitment to pacifism, a cause that has fascinated her since her youth. Her life, however, encompasses far more than just politics.

looking back, Van Gent shared, “I have been sad, I had love, I did things, I have experienced adventures.” She acknowledged that life isn’t always easy, stating, “Your life is not only fun. In your life, sad, nasty, annoying things happen.”

Van Gent announced her departure from the mayoral office in April, with her last day set for January 1.

Speaking from a terrace at the Schiermonnikoog marina, with views of the Wadden Sea, Van Gent explained her decision. “When you get older you experience things in your environment,” she said, enjoying a cup of coffee.

“you see how vulnerable life can sometimes be. I am healthy. I still have energy. And I thought I had to seriously wonder if I wanted to continue as a mayor until I was 70.”

“Then I thought: no, I’m just going, I’m stopping it. I am looking forward to experiencing new adventures.”

Key Details:

  • Mayor’s Age: 68
  • municipality: Schiermonnikoog
