Indonesian Peacekeepers Killed in Lebanon: Israel-Hezbollah Conflict Escalates

March 31, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Two Indonesian UN peacekeepers were killed Monday in southern Lebanon when an explosion destroyed their vehicle, marking the second fatal incident involving UNIFIL personnel in the region in the past 24 hours. A third peacekeeper was severely injured, and a fourth sustained injuries in the blast near the village of Bani Hayyan, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported.

The deaths come amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with increased cross-border fire in recent weeks. UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix stated that the casualties occurred as fighting intensifies, according to reports. On Sunday, another Indonesian peacekeeper was killed when a projectile exploded at a UN base near Adchit Al Qusayr. A colleague was critically injured in that incident and remains hospitalized in Beirut.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the identity of the peacekeeper killed Monday as Farizal Rhomadhon, 28, attributing his death to “indirect artillery fire.” The ministry stated that three other Indonesian peacekeepers were injured and are receiving medical attention. Arrangements are underway for the repatriation of Rhomadhon’s remains.

Foreign Minister Sugiono, speaking while accompanying President Prabowo Subianto on a visit to Japan, condemned the incident and instructed the Indonesian embassy in Beirut to monitor the condition of the injured and facilitate repatriation. Sugiono also announced that Indonesia’s representative to the United Nations in Modern York would seek a full investigation into the incidents from senior UN peacekeeping officials, aiming to determine the cause of the explosions.

Sugiono further reiterated Indonesia’s call for de-escalation and a return to negotiations, emphasizing the significant regional impact of the recent conflict. He added that President Prabowo has offered Indonesia’s mediation services to support efforts toward a ceasefire. In a post on X, Sugiono confirmed he had spoken with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi following the incidents.

The incidents represent the most serious involving Indonesian troops serving with UNIFIL since the recent escalation of hostilities in Lebanon. Indonesia is a significant contributor to the UNIFIL mission, deploying troops along the sensitive border area to patrol and monitor the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

Former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan condemned the attacks, directly attributing blame to Israel and alleging a deliberate targeting of Indonesian peacekeepers. “Indonesia has gone above and beyond… Yet the answer to that good faith is a bomb dropped on our soldiers’ base,” Baswedan stated, calling for accountability from the UN and the international community.

UN Secretary-General Guterres condemned the incidents, noting they were among a number of recent developments endangering the safety of peacekeepers. He called on all parties to uphold international law and ensure the security of UN personnel. UNIFIL is conducting investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding both explosions.

The violence in southern Lebanon has intensified following strikes involving Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions, raising concerns about a wider regional conflict. The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon is currently scheduled to conclude in 2026, with its mandate set to expire.
