Nationwide Protests Erupt across Indonesia, Resulting in Damage, Injuries, and Fatalities
JAKARTA – Demonstrations have taken place across Indonesia, spanning 107 locations in 32 provinces as August 25, 2025, according to data released Tuesday by Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian. While some protests were peaceful,many escalated into riots involving destruction and arson,notably in North Sumatra,DKI Jakarta,West Java,Yogyakarta,Central Java,East Java,NTB,South Sulawesi,and West Kalimantan.
Karnavian stated the unrest has resulted in damage to public facilities and government offices, and also loss of life. Estimated state losses range from tens to hundreds of billions of rupiah.
In DKI Jakarta, 22 Transjakarta and MRT stops sustained damage, totaling Rp3.3 billion for the MRT, Rp41.6 billion for Transjakarta, and Rp5.5 billion for CCTV systems.
A particularly violent outbreak occurred in makassar City, South Sulawesi, where the provincial and city DPRD buildings were burned. The incident resulted in three deaths and five injuries.
