Indianapolis Capitols Return in New Continental Football League – Summer 2026 Launch at Grand Park
Westfield, Indiana will be the home of the Indianapolis Capitols, a newly re-formed professional football team slated to begin play this summer in the relaunched Continental Football League (CoFL). The announcement, made Tuesday, March 24, designates Westfield’s Grand Park as the venue for all team operations, including roster selection, training, fan engagement, and home game competition.
The Capitols’ arrival marks the completion of the CoFL’s northern division, according to reports from February. The league, which intends to position itself as a developmental platform for players aspiring to higher levels of professional football, is structured as a third-tier minor league, similar to organizations like MiLB class AA, the ECHL, or USL League One. The CoFL aims to fill a gap in the summer football schedule, operating independently of both the NFL and the United Football League (UFL).
The Indianapolis Capitols carry a significant historical weight within the CoFL. The original Continental Football League operated from 1965 to 1969, and the Capitols were its final champions, securing the title in 1969 with a triple-overtime victory over the San Antonio Toros. The relaunched league emphasizes that it is a revival, but without direct organizational ties to the original iteration.
Greg Stremlaw, co-chief executive officer at Grand Park Sports & Entertainment, stated that the return of the Capitols is “an important step in the continued expansion and proliferation of football at Grand Park.” He added that Grand Park was “intentional about positioning” itself as the team’s long-term home after learning of the franchise’s relaunch within the CoFL.
The CoFL, founded in 2025, is currently planning for an eight-team league. Commissioner Mike Kelly has described the league’s mission as developing players, coaches, and staff, reviving community-based pro sports, and prioritizing financial sustainability. The league intends to operate under a hybrid of American and Canadian football rules.
Further details regarding the Indianapolis Capitols’ 2026 season schedule, ticket availability, and planned community initiatives are expected to be released in the coming weeks, according to league officials.
