India to Lift Domestic Airfare Caps
New Delhi – India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation will lift temporary fare caps on domestic air travel, effective March 31, 2026, according to an official statement released Thursday. The regulations, initially implemented in December 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, were intended to stabilize prices during a period of fluctuating demand.
The decision to remove the fare bands comes as the domestic aviation sector demonstrates sustained recovery, officials said. The ministry noted a significant increase in passenger traffic and improved load factors across airlines in recent months. The fare caps had been adjusted several times, with the latest revisions setting upper and lower limits on ticket prices based on flight duration.
Although the ministry has not released specific data on the impact of the fare caps, industry analysts suggest they helped prevent predatory pricing during the initial phases of the recovery. However, concerns have grown that the restrictions were hindering airlines’ ability to respond to market dynamics and potentially stifling competition.
The move to eliminate fare controls coincides with the approaching peak travel season for Indians. December is traditionally the busiest travel month in India, driven by Christmas celebrations, winter festivals, and the end-of-year holiday period. According to Air Trip Masters, airlines experience a surge in bookings between December 15th and January 5th, a period now expected to see increased price volatility. The firm recommends booking flights 60-90 days in advance to secure the best fares, with the period between September 15th and October 15th identified as the optimal booking window.
Airlines are now expected to have greater flexibility in setting fares, potentially leading to both lower prices for some routes and higher prices for others, depending on demand. Travelers seeking affordable flights to India are advised to compare prices across multiple airlines and travel agents, with options available through platforms like Air India, Skyscanner, and Expedia. Air India is currently offering promotional discounts of up to ₹1000 with the code 𝐀𝐈𝐒𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐑.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has indicated it will continue to monitor the market closely for any anti-competitive practices. No further regulatory interventions are currently planned, but officials have not ruled out the possibility of re-introducing fare controls should unforeseen circumstances arise. The next scheduled review of the domestic aviation sector is set for June 2026.
