According to Reuters reporting on August 24, Dhruv Jurel scored an unbeaten 115 to power India to a commanding 503-9 before they declared late on day two of the second and final Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo. Inclement weather and bad light restricted India to bowling just three overs before stumps, but that brief window proved enough to remove Lahiru Udara and nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya, leaving Sri Lanka struggling at eight for two and still trailing by 495 runs.
Lower-Order Resilience and Jurel’s Milestone Century
India took control of the match through a resilient lower-order batting display anchored by Jurel’s second Test hundred. According to Reuters, the innings was studded with nine fours and two sixes. Resuming the second day at 300-5 with Rishabh Pant due back after retiring hurt on Sunday following a forearm blow, India faced early pressure when Sri Lankan seamer Asitha Fernando struck in the second over to remove Saransh Jain for six. However, the batting collapse that the hosts craved failed to materialise.
Pant joined Jurel to forge a crucial 112-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Despite playing through pain from his bruised forearm, Pant constructed a combative fifty before lunch. He departed shortly after for 63, stepping out to Nuwantha Keshara and miscuing his shot to long-off. Following the dismissal of Manav Suthar soon after, Jurel maintained his composure as India’s total swelled.
Jurel lingered on 99 before securing his milestone century via a high-risk single, tapping Fernando to mid-off and executing a dive home that would have resulted in his run out had the fielder hit the stumps directly. Rising to his feet, he dusted himself off and embraced batting partner Mohammed Siraj. Liberated by reaching triple figures, Jurel immediately launched Fernando for a six over long-on and repeated the feat in the seamer’s next over by pulling another delivery into the stands.
Late Strikes Capitalize on Deteriorating Light
With only three overs available before the close of play due to rain and bad light, India’s bowling attack wasted no time denting Sri Lanka’s top order. Yashasvi Jaiswal flew to his right at third slip to take a sharp catch to dismiss Udara. As the light continued to deteriorate, India introduced spin into the attack. Suthar struck immediately in his first over, trapping Jayasuriya lbw to reduce Sri Lanka to 8-2 at stumps.
Reuters reported that India’s Jaiswal and Sri Lanka’s Fernando were each fined 25% of their match fees and assessed one demerit point for an on-field altercation that occurred on Sunday.
