Raccoon Rage Prompts Environmental Concerns Around lake Memphremagog
Bromont, Quebec – September 2, 2025 – A surge in aggressive raccoon behaviour is raising alarms among residents and prompting investigation from the Quebec Ministry of the Environment, notably around Lake Memphremagog. Reports of unusually bold and even violent encounters with raccoons have increased in recent weeks, with a notable concentration of incidents occurring in second homes and cottages.
The Ministry is actively monitoring the situation following multiple complaints, including several documented cases in Bromont. while raccoon encounters are not uncommon, the recent escalation in aggression-characterized by unprovoked attacks and attempts to enter residences-is prompting officials to assess potential causes and implement preventative measures. Caroline Bergeron,a local resident, provided photographic evidence of a raccoon attempting to access a roof, illustrating the animals’ increasingly brazen behavior.
The increased raccoon activity is particularly concerning for owners of seasonal properties, many of which remain unoccupied for extended periods, creating potential access points and food sources. Experts suggest that a combination of factors, including a plentiful food supply and a possible increase in the local raccoon population, may be contributing to the change in behavior. The Ministry of the Environment encourages residents to secure their properties, eliminate potential food sources, and report any aggressive raccoon encounters. Residents can contact the Ministry directly at 1 800-63SCOOP or submit information via email.
