Imran Khan: Jail Visits Restricted, Family Concerns Rise | Pakistan News Updates
Rawalpindi, Pakistan – Pakistani authorities again blocked family members from visiting former Prime Minister Imran Khan at Adiala Jail on Tuesday, prompting a renewed protest by his sisters and escalating tensions surrounding his detention. Aleema Khan, along with Noreen Khan, and Dr. Uzma Khan, were prevented from meeting with Khan despite it being a designated day for family and lawyer visits.
Jail authorities informed the family around 4 p.m. Local time that the meeting would not be permitted, according to Aleema Khan, who spoke to the media near the factory check-post. “We are not doing anything illegal or unconstitutional. If we are stopped every week, what option do we have other than protest?” she stated, emphasizing the family’s adherence to legal channels.
The denial of access follows a pattern of restrictions placed on Khan’s ability to communicate with and receive visits from family and legal counsel. The situation has led to accusations from Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), of a “blatant violation of rights.”
Security around Adiala Jail was significantly increased in anticipation of potential demonstrations. Police deployed water cannons at Gate No. 5 and erected barricades at key entry points, including Gorakhpur and the factory check-post. Local markets and petrol pumps were closed, and schools were shuttered for the day. PTI workers also began to gather near the jail.
Aleema Khan indicated the family’s demands center on fundamental constitutional principles. “The founder’s demand is the restoration of the Constitution, democracy and the rule of law,” she said, referencing Imran Khan. She also noted that Khan has been incarcerated for over two and a half years.
What we have is not the first time Imran Khan’s family has faced obstacles in attempting to visit him. Last week, a similar sit-in protest by Aleema Khan and PTI workers was dispersed when they were again prevented from reaching Adiala Jail.
In a separate development, Imran Khan was permitted to speak with his sons on Eid day, and his sons are welcome to visit Pakistan on Nicop cards as ‘Pakistani citizens’ according to Tarar. However, the continued denial of regular family visits raises concerns about the conditions of his detention and the level of access afforded to him.
Aleema Khan expressed frustration with the ongoing situation, stating, “Kept in jail for years, yet talk of deal.” This comment suggests a perception within the family that the restrictions are politically motivated.
