Ilhan Omar Election Claims: Minnesota & Simultaneous Wins
Representative Ilhan Omar responded to a social media post on Saturday, asserting that a political opponent is unlikely to win an election in Minnesota while she has simultaneously secured victories in three separate races. The post, made on X (formerly Twitter), did not specify the opponent or the races to which she referred.
The statement arrives as a challenge to a campaign from D.C. Attorney James Presley, who is running against Omar for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District seat. Presley, a former federal attorney, gained attention after a LinkedIn post surfaced in which he described his job as “soul-crushing.” The Star Tribune reported on the post, highlighting its potential impact on his campaign against Omar.
Omar’s district encompasses Minneapolis and surrounding areas. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2018, becoming the first Somali-American and one of the first Muslim women to serve in Congress. She has since faced repeated scrutiny and criticism, including from former President Donald Trump, who frequently targeted her and Minnesota’s large Somali population.
In 2019, Trump publicly fixated on Minnesota, specifically on Omar and the state’s Somali community, according to reporting by Al Jazeera. This focus included rhetoric surrounding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions in the state. Omar has been a vocal critic of ICE policies and their impact on immigrant communities, and in February, she announced four guests for the State of the Union address to highlight the impact of ICE actions in Minnesota, as reported by Quiver Quantitative.
Presley’s campaign has focused on issues of public safety and affordability, contrasting his background as a prosecutor with Omar’s progressive policies. The election is scheduled for November 2026. As of Sunday, Omar’s office had not responded to requests for further clarification regarding her social media post.
