ICE Airport Patrols: What Travelers Need to Know

March 24, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents began deployment to 14 U.S. Airports on Monday, March 23, 2026, as a partial government shutdown continues to strain Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staffing levels and cause significant travel delays, according to officials.

The deployment, authorized by the Trump administration, is intended to alleviate pressure on TSA officers facing prolonged workdays without pay, and to assist with non-security related tasks, freeing up TSA personnel for critical screening duties. White House border czar Tom Homan stated the agents are being sent to “facilitate Americans transit those lines,” but emphasized their primary role is to support TSA operations, not to conduct immigration enforcement.

The move comes after weeks of a Department of Homeland Security shutdown, resulting in hundreds of TSA employees quitting and thousands more calling out of work due to financial hardship. Airports in Atlanta, New York City, Houston, and Chicago are among those receiving ICE support. At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, ICE agents were observed patrolling security lines, while similar deployments occurred at John F. Kennedy International Airport, O’Hare International Airport, and others.

While ICE agents are being paid during the shutdown, officials have clarified their limitations. They are not trained to operate security checkpoints and will focus on tasks such as directing travelers and providing general assistance. However, Homan also stated that agents will take action if they observe any criminal activity, functioning as law enforcement officers would in any public space.

The deployment has raised questions about travelers’ rights, particularly regarding potential immigration checks. The administration maintains the focus is on easing congestion and ensuring air travel safety. Acting Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Lauren Bis stated the administration is “using every tool available to help American travelers” facing lengthy delays.

As of Monday, March 24, 2026, TSA wait times remained elevated at several major airports, with lines extending outside terminals in some locations. The administration has blamed Democrats for the funding delays fueling the shutdown, but negotiations on Capitol Hill remain stalled. The duration of the ICE deployment remains contingent on the resolution of the government shutdown and the restoration of full TSA staffing.
