IA 9 / WIS 82 bridge to open November 6, transportation officials say
State transportation authorities have revealed that the fresh IA 9 / WIS 82 bridge will officially open on Friday, November 6, giving commuters traveling between Wisconsin and Lansing, Iowa a direct Mississippi River crossing once again.
The expedited timeline marks significant progress for the multi-year infrastructure effort, which began in late 2023. After the old structure was torn down in December 2025, commercial and commuter vehicles depended on a complimentary temporary car ferry run cooperatively by Iowa DOT and WisDOT.
How the Mississippi River Detour Operated
Because the ferry managed more than 550 cars per day at the height of summer, this upcoming debut will bring back seamless regional links and drastically cut down commutes for area residents and companies.
Drivers accustomed to scheduling their daily commutes around the ferry schedule will soon regain uninterrupted access across the river. Commercial freight operators will similarly avoid the logistical delays inherent in waterborne transit.
Construction Continues Through Spring 2027
Although cars will return to the primary span at the beginning of November, supplementary tasks will persist throughout the winter months and into early 2027. Laborers will direct their efforts toward cleaning up the old ferry terminals, taking down the previous bridge supports, and completing final surface calibrations.
Agency representatives explained that sporadic lane narrowing could take place during spring finishing touches, though complete shutdowns are not expected prior to the final completion of the venture in late spring 2027.
Local businesses and commuters looking to coordinate regional logistics or address upcoming commercial adjustments following the reopening can consult local transportation planners and regional chambers of commerce for updated transit schedules.
