mclaren Executive Open to Future Racing Partnership with Max Verstappen
SILVERSTONE, UK – September 18, 2024 – A McLaren executive has expressed interest in perhaps competing alongside Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen in future endurance racing events. The comments surfaced as McLaren prepares its entry into the World Endurance Championship (WEC) beginning in 2027.
The remarks highlight McLaren’s ambition to build a competitive endurance racing program and acknowledge Verstappen’s exceptional driving talent. With McLaren’s planned WEC participation, the possibility of Verstappen joining their driver lineup, even temporarily, has sparked considerable discussion within the motorsport community. This potential collaboration could significantly elevate McLaren’s profile in endurance racing and provide a unique challenge for verstappen outside of Formula 1.
Speaking recently, the McLaren representative stated, “Actually, I would like to see Max as a colleague in a tolerance race, because he showed how quickly he had on the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit, even as he leads under a pseudonym.” He further added,”max is a great driver,he is a world champion four times for a good reason. Working with all drivers in the McLaren program is real. So, can I and Max are two colleagues? Who knows, perhaps one day…”
McLaren’s entry into the WEC marks a significant expansion for the team, traditionally focused on Formula 1. The WEC features iconic races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, presenting a different set of challenges for drivers and manufacturers alike. Verstappen has demonstrated versatility beyond Formula 1, notably participating in sim racing and showcasing rapid lap times on challenging circuits like the Nürburgring Nordschleife under an alias.
