Unexpected Confinement

When preparing for his daughter’s birth, Japanese content creator Ghib Ojisan was introduced to a cultural practice entirely new to him. He learned about confinement culture after his wife became pregnant. Instead of hiring help, he chose a different path.

From Outsider to Hands-On Dad

In Japan, many couples handle newborns with occasional help from their parents. Ghib found himself unexpectedly becoming a confinement nanny for his wife. This meant cooking, cleaning, and changing diapers.

“I wanted to experience everything. I feel like this is only a once in a lifetime thing, so I wanted to experience doing everything myself instead of just outsourcing this part of my journey,” he explained.

The new dad’s duties also include housework and cooking special meals. According to a recent study, fathers who actively participate in childcare report higher levels of satisfaction (Source 2024).

The Confinement Shift System

The couple developed a shift system to care for their baby. Ghib’s shift starts around 7 am, while his wife mainly handles the night. His wife isn’t strict about traditional practices. Thus, Ghib found the role doable.

Ups and Downs of Fatherhood

Ghib admits the biggest challenge is deciding between his wife and baby’s needs. Balancing work with the baby’s demands has been another struggle. He is learning to treasure these moments.

He advises new fathers to be understanding and prioritize themselves. Ghib emphasized the importance of teamwork. He and his wife take turns, allowing each to pursue personal interests.
