Interstate Closures Planned for Twin Cities This Weekend
Motorists should anticipate significant delays this weekend as sections of westbound Interstate 94 and southbound Interstate 35E in St. Paul will be closed for maintenance. The closures begin at 10 p.m. on Friday and will remain in effect until 5 a.m. on Monday.
The westbound I-94 closure will span the stretch between John Ireland-35E and John Ireland Blvd., while southbound I-35E will be closed between University Ave. and 10th St.Traffic on westbound I-94 will be detoured via northbound I-35E to westbound minnesota Highway 36, then southbound Minnesota highway 280. Southbound I-35E traffic will be directed eastbound on I-94 to southbound U.S. Highway 52, then westbound I-494. These closures coordinate with ongoing maintenance on the I-94 Dartmouth bridge in Minneapolis, where the Marion St.bridge over I-94 is expected to reopen to traffic on Friday.
Looking ahead, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) will begin replacing the John Ireland Blvd. bridge over I-94 on October 6. This is part of a larger initiative encompassing nine bridge projects in St. Paul scheduled for completion through fall 2026. The new John Ireland Blvd.bridge design will include sidewalk, biking, and accessibility improvements, and the project will occur following the Twin Cities Marathon.
Additionally, MnDOT will conduct overnight cleaning and repairs in the I-94 Lowry Hill Tunnel in Minneapolis next week. Both directions of I-94 through the tunnel will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday between Groveland ave. and Minnesota Highway 55. Associated ramp closures include those from northbound I-35W to westbound I-94, U.S. Highway 55/Hiawatha ave. to eastbound I-94, and eastbound I-394 to eastbound I-94.
